Starbucks chose Carbon Neutral Polygon for its NFT Odyssey Project

Starbucks Coffee Company today released the official details about Starbucks Odyssey. It’s a new experience that combines the company’s successful Starbucks Rewards loyalty program with an NFT platform that allows customers to earn and purchase digital assets, unlocking exclusive experiences and rewards.

Starbucks had sensed back in 2019 the changes induced and opportunities created by cryptocurrencies for businesses that do not necessarily belong to the financial sector. The American coffee chain wanted to serve its customers, non-fungible tokens (NFT) whose value is largely based on the fifty-year history of the company.

Indeed, the CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, announced on April 4, 2022, during an Open Forum, that his company plans to dive into NFTs, before the end of the year 2022. Starbucks confirmed this information a few hours later.

About five months later, the company explained that Starbucks Odyssey will be an extension of the industry-leading Starbucks Rewards program, which members will be able to access through their Starbucks Rewards login credentials.

To participate in the Starbucks Odyssey experience, Starbucks Rewards members will log into the web application using their existing loyalty program credentials.

According to Polygon’s release, starting today, Sept. 12, Starbucks customers and partners can sign up for a chance to be the first to access the Starbucks Odyssey experience, which will launch later this year.

Ryan Butz, vice president of loyalty, strategy and marketing at Starbucks said:

Building Starbucks Odyssey using technology that aligns with our sustainability aspirations and commitments is a top priority. We took a very thoughtful and thorough approach when evaluating which blockchain to use and Polygon’s fast, low-cost, carbon-neutral network is the perfect foundation for our first digital community.

Once logged in, they will be able to engage in a variety of activities, which Starbucks calls “journeys” – such as playing interactive games or accepting challenges to further their knowledge of the Starbucks brand or coffee in general. When they complete these journeys, members can receive digital collectibles in the form of NFT in advance. However, Starbucks Odyssey has dropped the technical term and referred to these NFT collectibles as “travel stamps.”
