John McAfee on Netflix : the ex-crypto influencer is still alive?

Died by suicide in prison in 2021, John McAfee would not have died according to his ex-girlfriend, who testifies in a documentary released on Netflix.

Who is John McAfee?

John McAfee was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

He was a 75-year-old American entrepreneur who “apparently committed suicide” hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite him to the United States to face tax evasion charges.

John McAfee began his career at NASA before working at several computer companies and then setting up his own business. In 1987, he founded the McAfee company and sold the antivirus software he had created. Although he resigned from the company five years later, he made a fortune with the resale of software bearing his name to the American giant Intel. But in 2014, Intel, which has recovered the brand McAfee, decides to abandon this name became sulfurous. For the entrepreneur is then on the run.

Far from being sorry about it, John McAfee, who says he no longer recognizes his products, is happy about it. In an interview with the BBC quoted by the site Numérama, the businessman said he was “eternally grateful to Intel for freeing me from this terrible association with the worst software on this planet”.

In 2013, John McAffee had already posted a parody video on YouTube in which he explained how to “disable a McAfee antivirus“, an antivirus that he described, again according to Numérama, as “a barely passable program that updates itself at the worst possible times”.

John McAfee gradually became a guru of cryptocurrencies thanks to which he claimed to earn 2,000 dollars a day. He was followed by nearly a million people on the social network Twitter where he presented himself as “iconoclast, lover of women, adventure and mystery”. The American justice pursued him for not having declared the incomes related to this activity.

He was finally arrested in October 2020 at Barcelona airport, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul (Turkey). The day before, the U.S. justice system had issued an indictment against him for failing to declare millions of dollars of income from the promotion of cryptocurrencies.

Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee

The life of John McAfee lends itself easily to a movie as it is full of twists and turns. The creator of the eponymous antivirus has for the moment the right to a Netflix documentary.

This chaotic life, full of drugs, murders and prison stays, is summarized in a biopic entitled “Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee”.

Witnesses include the former companion of John McAfee: Samantha Herrera. The former crypto influencer had met her in Belize where he had fled after a case of alleged murder.

And according to her testimony aired in the Netflix documentary, John McAfee would therefore not have died in prison last year. She says she received a phone call from him, assuring her that he had faked his death by suicide.

According to Samantha Herrera, the deceased would have assured her that only three people were in the secret (before the broadcast of the program at least …). John McAfee would also have offered to run away with him. Shortly after his escape to the United States, the latter had however broken up and married another woman, Janice Dyson.

McAfee thus found death in June 2021 in a Spanish prison. He was found hanged in his cell. This suicide followed a court decision ordering his extradition to the United States.
