Online retail giant Amazon is reportedly about to launch a first initiative related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The experiment would invite Amazon customers to play crypto games and collect free NFTs in the process.
“We knew this was possible,” a source told Blockworks. “But now it looks like it’s really happening. It’s going to affect existing players in the space – if they execute and do this correctly and are smart about it.”
Amazon’s primary goal would be to encourage its customers to play blockchain games and claim free NFTs in the process.
To create this platform, Amazon would have approached many major partners in the cryptocurrency industry, such as layer 1 blockchains, startups specializing in blockchain games and even cryptocurrency exchange platforms.
This NFT platform is reportedly currently in development and could be natively operated on Amazon rather than Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Amazon subsidiary that already has a foot in Web3.
As a reminder, Amazon entered the crypto world back in 2013, with its Amazon Coins program, which today is “more like a simple loyalty program than a cryptographic initiative” Blockworks points out. Moreover, no official source has yet denied or confirmed the statements relayed by Blockworks. If such a platform is indeed to be launched next April, it is highly likely that more details will be revealed in the coming weeks.
